Countering Violent Extremism in the Maghreb and the Sahel: The EU’s Role Under Discussion.
PREVEX is holding two café debates organised by the Sant’ Anna School of Advanced Studies (SSSA), the Alliance for Rebuilding Governance in Africa (ARGA) and Al Akhawayn University (AUI). The debates are in French.
Following the adoption of the European Union’s counterterrorism strategy, the fight against violent extremism has become one of the key objectives of the EU’s external action, in particular in the area of its neighbourhood (enlarged ). But what is the European Union really doing to contribute to the prevention and fight against violent extremism in the Maghreb and the Sahel?
This question is at the heart of the Horizon2020 PREVEX research project (Preventing Violent Extremism in the Balkans and the Mena: Strengthening Resilience in Enabling Environment ). Thanks to the collaboration of researchers from Europe, the Maghreb and the Sahel, a new Policy Brief takes stock of the strategies, projects, actions and underlying stories through which the EU implements its commitment to prevent and counter violent extremism in practice.
Drawing on extensive data collection and interviews with key stakeholders, the Policy Brief includes in-depth case studies from Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, Mali and Niger as well as analysis of national strategies and regional and interregional trends.

The online format enables voices from the field to be collected and brought to the attention of policymakers, with a view to helping the international community, and the EU in particular, to develop a more sensitive and effective approach to prevention and countering violent extremism.
The participation of civil society, researchers and students interested in the issues of violent extremism in the Maghreb and the Sahel is strongly encouraged.
