How did shadow competition between the Islamic State’s (IS) various radical ideological factions lead the organization into an open and extremely violent internal war? In this article, PREVEX researcher Djallil Lounnas (Assistant Professor, Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane) analyses the origins and ideological foundations of the three main schools of thought within IS: the Neo-Takfiri, the Bin Ali, and the Hazimiyah. Moreover, he seeks to explain the patterns of conflict as well as the perspectives for a possible reconciliation between them in the wake of the death of Al Baghdadi.
