In this paper in the French journal Sécurité Globale, PREVEX researcher Djallil Lounnas, drawing on interviews conducted in June 2019 in Algeria, explores how the AQIM in Algeria reacted to the Hirak and actually did not manage to benefit from the popular protest movement. Beyond that, it also maps up the situation of the jihadi groups in Algeria and how the security services reorganised themselves to deal with the situation while maintaining the pressure on the jihadi groups thus avoiding a security vacuum.
