On Tuesday, 6 July 2021, the Centre for Advanced Study (CAS) Sofia organized a workshop entitled “Violent Extremism in North Macedonia”. The workshop aimed to foster the preparation of the CAS team within PREVEX for the envisaged fieldwork in the Western Balkans, particularly in the Republic of North Macedonia. In addition to PREVEX-researchers, a number of external experts held presentations.
During the presentations and the discussions, a set of interrelated issues were debated, including the link between ideology and local context in shaping enabling environments for violent extremism; the contextually informed understanding of violent extremism; as well as the factors for its occurrence and non-occurrence in the region. A particular emphasis was put on the role of the state and the applicability of the concept of fragile states in the case of North Macedonia.
